Teskey’s

Not many feed barns also offer a selection of books and DVDs; not many Western apparel stores have a toy section for kids; and not many saddle shops sell dinnerware and will serve you a homemade chicken salad sandwich while you’re browsing. But such is the diversity of products and services offered by Teskey’s. If it’s cowboy-related, it’s probably somewhere on the shelves of this Weatherford, Texas-based retailer.

“Our goal was to be the biggest horse store around,” says co-owner (with her husband, Mike) Anissa Teskey. “We wanted to be a one-stop shop that would have something for everybody.” The business began back in 1998 as a saddle and tack retailer operated out of Mike’s garage. After success at various trade shows, Teskey’s opened in Weatherford and gradually expanded its product lines. Items for the working cowboy are still prominently featured, however, with more than 5,000 bits and spurs and 700 saddles.

From boots to bull-riding gear, candles to concho accessories, and cattle chutes to silver jewelry, it can take hours, if not days, to peruse the entire inventory. Anissa says many of their customers do just that. “Some people, especially those from places like Australia and Venezuela, have planned their vacations around coming here on their way to or from somewhere else, or just to visit us. We have a lot of customers from Brazil who will come in every day for five days. There’s definitely a lot to see.”

Teskey’s Uptown, their second location, opened in Fort Worth this past January. “It’s a little more contemporary—we call it rock ’n’ roll meets cowboy soul,” Anissa says. But both stores share a friendly atmosphere that encourages longer visits. “If you just want to hang out, come on in. The idea was to create a warm, welcome feeling where you’re never in a rush to leave.”
