Colorado Ranch Conservation

Snowmass Creek Ranch
If you subscribe to Merle Haggard’s belief that “if God doesn’t live in Colorado, I’ll bet that’s where he spends most of his time,” then John Fielder is on a spiritual mission. The photographer works to preserve Colorado’s natural environment and help the ranchers who sustainably live off the land by promoting the sacred beauty of the state’s ranch lands. The cover of Fielder’s Ranches of Colorado, simulating leather and barn wood, makes a bold statement. But within the book’s pages you’ll find awe-inspiring photographs that will transport you to locations so bucolic and serene that it is difficult to believe these present-day images were crafted with film, not paint.
Ten of the 50 ranches photographed are further explored in essays written by the late James Meadow. His words give the properties and the people that own them an added dimension, strengthening Fielder’s message that natural conservation begins with the protection of the livelihood of those who respect nature.
