Before it became a national park, Death Valley was a hub for prospectors during the 1849 California Gold Rush. For the past 66 years, the Death Valley ’49ers — a local nonprofit group dedicated to honoring the region’s Old West heritage — has hosted an annual encampment replete with Western music, pioneer costume contests, a poker tournament, a horse parade, and an invitational art show.
