Hawaiian Horses

The Hawaiian Islands’ first horses, a mustang mare and her foal, came ashore in 1803 as a gift to King Kamehameha. Since then, ranching has become a way of life in this tropical clime. From August 20 to 22, Hawaii’s Big Island will host Hawaii Horse Expo 2010 at the Waikoloa Stables and the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort. Presenters include Dr. Robert M. Miller, renowned equine behaviorist; Rick Lamb, host of RFD-TV’s popular The Horse Show; and Richard Winters, the 2009 Road to the Horse Champion. Proceeds will benefit the Hawaii Island Humane Society’s Horse Rescue Fund, which helps abused and abandoned horses on the island.
