Dream Weavers

According to Navajo legend, the sacred deity Spider Woman taught the early Navajo people to weave on a loom of earth, sky, sun rays, and lightning. Anthropologists believe they learned the craft from the Pueblo Indians after migrating to the American Southwest from Canada’s Northwest Territories thousands of years ago. Either way, the vibrant colors and graphic patterns of the tribe’s textiles are now serving as inspiration for Daniel Penciner and Stuart Handelsman, who have incorporated the artistry of Navajo weavings into their latest bedding designs for the Daniel Stuart Studio. Made of luxurious yet practical fabrics like jacquard knits, washable velvets, and microsuede, the bedding collections (Algonquin Camel Bed collection, shown, available through High Camp Home, www.highcamphome.com) blend traditional tribal patterns with modern prints for a look these innovative designers deem “Western hip.”
