I Am Comanche

C&I's Poem of the Week for Jan. 19, 2011

My rider will not survive the day:
His leg shattered;
It is a bitter fray,
But I survive —
I am Comanche.

 Indians conspire like fiendish bees:
Captain Keogh killed;
Troopers fall dead with shaking knees,
But I survive —
I am Comanche.

My rider’s body spared the gore:
Battle Ridge his scene of death;
Sheltered by Lamb of God lore,
But I survive —
I am Comanche.

 Arrows a stinging rain:
Long Hair’s intemperate plan denied;
Bullets find their target, none remain,
But I survive —
I am Comanche.

 Sitting Bull’s commandment clear:
Lead with a shield of peace;
Life so very dear,
I will survive —
I am Comanche.
