Graham Greene Saddles Up for 'Defiance'

Dances with Wolves star and past Cowboys & Indians cover guy Graham Greene soon will be riding tall in a post-apocalyptic TV series.

The Oscar-nominated actor has landed a key role in Defiance, a futuristic drama set on an Earth ravaged by interplanetary war. In an isolated community, disparate survivors struggle to establish a new society amid the devastation.

According to Broadwayworld.com, Greene will play Rafe McCawley, “a self-made success who owns and operates the largest mine in the territory. However, Rafe’s status as the richest and most powerful human in the town of Defiance comes with a price, as he struggles to navigate both familial and political alliances in this precariously assembled new world.”

Defiance promises to be a groundbreaking series, in that it’s an ambitious blend of scripted drama and Massive Multiplayer Online Gaming (MMOG). Specifically, it’s the product of a unique partnership between Syfy, the cable network that will air Defiance, and online game publisher Trion Worlds. As Janice Kay of ScienceFiction.com explains: “What will be seen on the series will affect what will happen in the game and vice versa. Players of the MMO game can be part of the series, as references of their achievements will be mentioned in the series.”

Production on Defiance is slated to begin next month is Toronto, with feature filmmaker Scott Stewart (Legion, Priest) on board to direct the pilot.
