Six years ago when struck with the idea for a line of handcrafted leather shoes and accessories, Karen Kell moved to Mexico to hone her skills in leatherwork, ultimately creating her own style by combining old and new techniques. Now she’s back stateside working from a studio in Los Angeles, handcrafting shoes, apparel, and accessories for her Karen Kell Collection. Although she made her name in sandals with traditionally tooled leather on wooden wedges, Kell also designs an assortment of handbags that have distinctively Western appeal. Among her personal favorites is a line of large totes embossed and painted with classic pinup images of Old West cowgirls, like this roping cowgirl design.
