Return to 'Dallas' — Farewell To J.R.
Tonight marks the start of the second season for Dallas on TNT – and the beginning of the end for J.R. Ewing. The two-hour season premiere – airing at 9 pm ET -- will feature some of the last scenes filmed with Larry Hagman as the iconic Texas oilman before the popular actor passed away last November.
But don’t worry: J.R. may soon be gone, but he won’t be forgotten.
As executive producer Cynthia Cidre recently told TV Guide, the character will be sent off in style, in a “Who Killed J.R.?” story arc that Cidre hopes will be as riveting as the classic 1980s “Who Shot J.R.?” mystery. “We all felt that having J.R. die of natural causes would have been completely inappropriate, not only to the character, but also to Larry Hagman,” Cidre said.
But wait there’s more: Cidre also told TV Guide that the writers plan to spring a major surprise during the reading of J.R.’s will, triggering more dramatic events in the weeks and months – and maybe years -- ahead.
“J.R. is going to be a character in this show for as long as it runs,” Dallas co-star Patrick Duffy promised TV Guide, “in the same way that Jock and Miss Ellie are. I’m sure a lot’s going to surface that J.R.’s done that none of us ever knew about. And that will always bring back the image of Larry Hagman.”
