Rodeo photography lost one of its greats yesterday with the passing of 86-year-old legend Louise Serpa. She died after a three-year battle with cancer.

Serpa’s been called the “Ansel Adams of rodeo” and, since the news circulated yesterday, she’s been receiving loving tributes from a hometown publication and others.

The folks at the Tucson Rodeo, Serpa’s second home of sorts, tell us that her best known photo is the one below, Jim Mihalek on Hud, Tucson 1971.

You can find many more great action and portrait shots (as well as a link to a PBS documentary) on their tribute site here

Apart from being the subject of a PBS documentary and receiving honors from the PRCA and the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame, Serpa also published a book, Rodeo, which featured commentary by writer Larry McMurtry.

The next Tucson Rodeo is coming up in February; expect plenty of tributes to one of the sport’s finest chroniclers.
