'Justified' Recap: Get Caught Up on Season 3
Each Wednesday from this point on, we'll get you caught up on the latest episode of FX's series Justified — but just enough so that it won't spoil anything if you missed it. We'll keep track of the twists and turns in the lives of the Harlan County denizens. No matter what side of the law they might be on, we just can't seem to get enough.
We'll kick things off with a short look at each of the episodes that have aired so far.
Episode 1: "The Gunfighter"
In the Season 3 premiere, U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant, above) is off the streets and on the mend after his showdown with the Bennett clan in Season 2. With the Bennetts neutralized (for now) and Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins) behind bars, it almost seems as though Raylan will get a break ... but, what fun would that be? So, when an ice-cold killer comes a-callin', Raylan decides that keeping a cool head is the way to play a hot hand of poker. But while Raylan continues to rekindle his romance with ex-wife Winona (Natalie Zea), Boyd is masterminding a comeback with a little help from Eva (Joelle Carter).
Episode 2: "Cut Ties"
The season's second installment reminds us why Chief Deputy Art Mullen (Nick Searcy) is the boss, as the U.S. Marshals face off against a plot to compromise the Federal Witness Protection Program. Boyd seeks revenge against our favorite surviving Bennett, Dickie (wonderfully played by Jeremy Davies), with unexpected results. And as outside forces unknown to Raylan conspire to control the Kentucky underworld, a showdown looms.
Episode 3: "Harlan Roulette"
Boyd tries to get a handle on Mag's missing property and re-assert his control over the Crowder criminal enterprise. Dickie Bennett seems to be cooking up a plan as crazy as his own haircut, although we can't quite imagine what kind of cards he could have left to play. And, speaking of games, between the lethal Texas Hold 'Em in Episode 1, the hide-and-seek in Episode 2, and the Deer Hunter-style Harlan roulette challenge in this week's episode, the moral to this Justified season thus far is clear: Playing games in Harlan will get you killed.
