Josh Ritter, Bringing in the Darlings – Idaho singer-songwriter Josh Ritter makes laid-back, atmospheric tunes that wouldn’t seem out of left field to a country fan. On top of that, the cover of his new six-song EP is modeled after some sort of Western shadowbox. Same goes for the first video from the EP, “Love Is Making Its Way Back Home.” Very nice.
Michael Martin Murphey, Campfire on the Road – The current king of cowboy songs is back with the second ‘Lone Cowboy’ collection, featuring songs recorded live on the road and by himself, demo-style. His stuff is the perfect soundtrack for a real or pretend home on the range. Find out more here.
The Chieftains, Voice of Ages – Among the collaborators on the Irish band’s 50th anniversary album are Miranda Lambert’s girl group, Pistol Annies, recent Grammy winners Bon Iver and the Civil Wars, the Secret Sisters, and alt-bluegrass acts Punch Brothers and the Low Anthem. The names make a little more sense when you see who co-produced the record – Fort Worth’s own T-Bone Burnett, who’s known for bringing legends and newcomers together.
Various artists, ‘Act of Valor’ soundtrack – Country stars dominate the soundtrack for the new action movie featuring real U.S. Navy SEALs. You’ll find inspirational and subtly patriotic tunes from the likes of Keith Urban, Sugarland, Trace Adkins, Wynonna Judd and more. Listen to Lady A’s contribution, “I Was Here,” below.
Chelsea Crowell, Crystal City – If the last name seems familiar, that’s because it is. Chelsea’s the daughter of Rodney Crowell and Roseanne Cash (who happens to be my favorite tweeter ever). There’s a subtle twang to the material on her new album, although she leans more toward the Americana sounds of artists such as Neko Case. Expectedly, it’s very cool and tasteful music.
