Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton are among the notables playing major roles in The Hatfields and McCoys, an ambitious three-part miniseries set to premiere this Memorial Day weekend on The History Channel. Directed by Kevin Reynolds (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves), the period drama also features Powers Boothe (Deadwood), Tom Berenger (Peacemakers) and Mare Winningham (Wyatt Earp) in a meticulously researched account of the bitter and bloody feud between two clans that became the stuff of American legend.

For the benefit of those who tuned in late, a History Channel press release informs: "The Hatfield-McCoy saga begins with 'Devil' Anse Hatfield (Costner) and Randall McCoy (Paxton). Close friends and comrades during the Civil War, they returned to their neighboring homes – Hatfield in West Virginia, McCoy just across the Tug River border in Kentucky – to increasing tensions, misunderstandings and resentments that soon exploded into all-out warfare between the two families. As hostilities grew, friends, neighbors and outside forces joined the fight, bringing the two states to the brink of another Civil War."'
