In some circles, especially in Texas, he needs no introduction, but the inimitable Kinky Friedman has done so much that it bears reeling off: singer-songwriter, humorist, novelist, former columnist for Texas Monthly, former gubernatorial candidate — and then some.
Friedman’s latest undertaking is the July 6 release of his album Circus of Life. Distributed through his own Echo Hill Records, it takes listeners back to the good old days of classic country — all guitar pickin’ and camaraderie.
While it’s said Friedman styles himself in the mold of satirists like Will Rogers and Mark Twain, the track “Copper Love” — a happy-go-lucky feeling bluegrass tune — presents a sweeter side of the University of Texas alum.
It’s a song of celebration and remembrance.
“‘Copper Love’ is someone we miss very much,” Friedman says. “Whenever I say ‘we’ I’m referring to me and the mouse in my pocket. Joe Cirotti and Augie Meyers melded bluegrass with jazz to take this one on home.”
With its fast finger picking and jazz undertones, “Copper Love” reminds us of everything we love about Friedman’s signature cigar-worn voice and singular personality.
